PITTSBURGH — Caleb Downs skipped on-field testing at the NFL Combine and still makes a case as the best player in the Draft.

Every scout knows what the game film says. The only debate is about positional value, not player value.

A flagged knee issue in Indianapolis raised some eyebrows. But it hasn’t moved him off top-10 boards, and it shouldn’t.

Downs processes like a QB in a secondary, playing Strong Safety, Nickel, and sub-packages at an elite level across three seasons at two of the best programs in college football.

By the numbers

• Stock: Blue-chip top-10 lock; positional value is the only credible reason any board has him outside the top 5.

• Combine: Opted out of on-field testing. A flagged knee issue was noted in Indianapolis but has not derailed his standing. His intelligence, instincts, and range play at every level of a defense.

• Fits: Giants (need a defensive quarterback in the secondary; multiple mocks project him here in the top 5), Bengals (defense needs a floor raiser; allows young DBs to develop behind him), Commanders (Dan Quinn values versatile secondary players with communication skills).

• Best case: Top 5.

• Most likely: 5 to 10, with positional value the only ceiling pressure.

PITTSBURGH — Arvell Reese is 20 years old, already compared to Micah Parsons, and the Jets might not be able to say no.

Reese ran a 4.46 at the NFL Combine, played LB at Ohio State, and now declares himself an Edge rusher for the NFL Draft.

Mel Kiper ranks Arvell Reese No. 1 on his big board. WalterFootball can’t imagine slotting him lower than No. 2.

The Jets traded away Jermaine Johnson and Quinnen Williams, have a defense ranked 29th in EPA, and carry more than $100 million in dead money into 2026. Reese is the most logical answer to the Jets’ problems. He’s also, by most accounts, the most exciting defensive prospect in years.

Conference Championship week brings Oregon’s second 12-0 start in school history (previously in 2010 when the Ducks advanced to the BCS title game).

Undefeated Oregon held steady at CFP No. 1 for the fifth week after hammering unranked rival Washington 49-21 in Week 14.

The Ducks are the first non-SEC team at AP No. 1 this season (previously Texas, Alabama, and Georgia).

Fittingly, the Big Ten Offensive & Defensive Players of the Year will square up with the conference title on the line — Penn State’s Abdul Carter and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel.
